Seven Metres Wide, Forty-Three Metres Down
Murchison Falls National Park runs some 3,840 square kilometers across northern Uganda, grass gone the color of dry straw under flat-topped acacia and stands of borassus palm standing around like they own the place. The falls themselves gave the park its name, and they earn it. The wide, lazy Nile gets forced through a gap just seven metres across and thrown forty-three metres down into the gorge, and you feel that drop in your chest before you ever lay eyes on the water. Lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo, hippo, and Nile crocodile all call this ground home, alongside one of Africa's largest populations of Rothschild's giraffe, necks up over the treeline like they're keeping watch. Come in the dry stretches, December through February or June through September, and the grass drops low enough that the whole park seems to walk out into the open just for you.

Elephant Ground
Built where the elephants walk
The lodge sits right on the elephants' own ground, and everything here was built to answer to that: stone and seasoned timber and the hardwoods of this stretch of Uganda, canvas stretched pale against the green of the bush. Even the pool picks up the theme, and not by accident. Seen from above, it's shaped like an elephant, a swim-up bar at its side, and two walk-in entries cut with no steps at all, one at the trunk and one at the neck, so getting in feels less like climbing a ladder and more like wading into a river. A hot tub sits close by for when the evening cools off fast, and some nights dinner moves outside to the fire pit, where the sky does most of the entertaining. The Elephant Vista Lounge and Restaurant holds five separate lounges, one of them on the roof, open to the river air, where private dining can be arranged with the Nile running below and, if the timing lines up, elephants coming down to drink at the water's edge. Everything around it has been left close to how it was found, so the ground still feels like the one the elephants have always known. Because it is.

Fifteen safari canvas tents rise on poured concrete and stone, built to stay put, unlike the old East African camps that came down again by morning. Solar power, hot water, and USB charging run through every one. Rock paths link each tent back to the lodge, close enough that dinner's never far off, far enough that the river still sounds like it's yours alone. Every tent, Deluxe, Luxury, or Family, faces the River Nile itself, the same wide, unhurried stretch of water known downstream toward the falls for its hippo and crocodile.
Six Deluxe African Thatch Safari Tents hold up to three guests each, with stone floors that stay cool well past noon, canvas sides built to catch the river breeze rather than shut it out, and an en suite bathroom tucked just off the sleeping area. Seven Luxury African Thatch Safari Tents hold up to six guests each, air conditioned, with a separate living area and a private deck built for watching the light change over the water, one slow shade at a time. Two Family African Thatch Safari Tents match the Luxury standard, only roomier, sleeping up to two adults and six children under one flat nightly rate, however many of the kids actually show up. Furniture throughout is handmade by African Rustic, built for a country that has never had much patience for anything fussier.

By Land and by River
Game Drives, Boat Safaris, and the Falls
Game drives and guided walks, led by experienced local operators, put you on the ground with lion, elephant, buffalo, and a wide range of antelope and birdlife, the dust of the track rising pale behind the vehicle in the dry months. A boat safari on the River Nile brings you close enough to hear hippos before you see them, past Nile crocodiles laid out on the banks, with the falls visible ahead, throwing mist into the air long before the boat reaches them. The falls themselves can be reached both by water and on foot, for the view from below and the climb to the view from above.

The Elephant Oasis holds fifteen tents total, deliberately kept small to protect its private feel and quiet. Every enquiry receives a proposal built around your dates within 48 hours. For guests who want help arranging safaris and logistics, we recommend a tour operator who has worked across East Africa for more than thirty years, though many guests arrive already working with an operator of their own. What’s left, once the day’s activity settles and the fire pit burns low, is the land’s own sound, birdsong and insects and, some nights, the low call of something farther off. It’s one of the reasons guests come back.
