The grass north of the Nile turns pale gold through the dry months and doesn't apologize for it, broken by flat-crowned acacia and borassus palms standing around like they're guarding something. Lion, leopard, elephant, and buffalo move through this ground, and so do enough Uganda kob, Jackson's hartebeest, and oribi to make you wonder if anyone told them the rest of the region runs short on both.

Dust rises fine and pale behind the vehicle and settles slow in the still air, carrying the dry, mineral smell of grass that's spent all day arguing with the sun. Guides who've spent years reading this ground can tell where the animals are moving before you can, and they know exactly when to cut the engine and let the bush go quiet enough to hear it.

A vehicle moves past most of what actually happens out here. On foot, all of it comes forward: tracks pressed fresh into damp soil, the papery rasp of insects working over a fallen log, the ground itself changing underfoot from dry grass to the cool give of riverbank mud.

Get close enough and the bush smells like a different place entirely, green and faintly sweet after rain, dry and mineral once the heat sets back in. Guides build the route each morning around whatever the terrain and the animals are doing that day, not a path drawn once and walked forever, and they'll stop wherever the ground has something worth reading.

This is where the whole Nile, after gathering the width of a proper river, gets squeezed through a gap seven metres wide and dropped forty-three metres into the gorge below. You feel it in your chest before you ever see the water do it.

See it from both ends and it tells two different stories. The boat approach from underneath sends spray across the deck cool and fine well before the roar catches up to explain itself. The walk to the top shows the same water minutes before the drop, flat and silver and almost polite, like it hasn't decided yet what it's about to do.
